Florida electrical panel changes need the permit file first
A Florida electrical panel change or service upgrade can affect permits, licensed work, utility coordination, house papers, and future home records.
A panel change or service upgrade is electrical work. Start with the local electrical permit before the job begins. Florida’s new permit break for some home projects under $7,500 took effect July 1, 2026, but it does not cover electrical work.
Orange County, for example, calls for a permit and final inspection when a panel or service is changed. The utility may also need to take part if the job changes the meter, service line, or power link. Not every panel job needs that extra step.
Use a licensed electrical contractor unless the owner truly meets Florida’s owner-builder rules. Those rules do not let an owner hire an unlicensed person for work that needs a license. Ask the permit office and utility for the order of steps before anyone turns off the power.
Keep the permit, contractor details, final inspection, panel list, labels, bill, and any utility release. When buying a home, check an open or missing permit before closing. It is much easier to sort out while the seller and work records are still close at hand.
