Gilchrist County handyman work follows the job, not the label
Gilchrist County does not issue a general handyman license; whether a worker needs a state contractor license or permit depends on the actual job.
Gilchrist County does not issue a general handyman license. That does not mean every small repair needs some other contractor license.
Florida law bars a local government from making a license for handyman work that does not match a state contractor trade. At the same time, the word “handyman” does not allow a person to do work that needs a state license. Roofing, wiring, plumbing, air work, and work on the home’s frame can fall in that group.
The work decides the license, not the label or price alone. Florida has a narrow casual-work exception for some jobs below $2,500. It has rules against splitting a larger job and limits on how an unlicensed person may advertise. It is not a general handyman card.
Write down the exact job before hiring. Check whether the address is inside Trenton or in the rest of Gilchrist County. Ask the right office about permits, then use DBPR to check any license the work needs. If a worker asks you to pull an owner-builder permit, pause. That permit makes the owner responsible and cannot be used to dodge the license rules.
Keep the estimate, license result, permit, inspections, and final approval together. The papers should name the same work the person is actually doing.
