Mound House keeps Fort Myers Beach history above the sand
Mound House pairs a restored 1921 island home with a Calusa shell mound that records nearly 2,000 years of life beside Estero Bay.
Mound House begins with the ground beneath Fort Myers Beach. Calusa people built the shell mound over many generations. The site now holds signs of nearly 2,000 years of life beside Estero Bay.
The restored 1921 Case House stands on top of the mound. Its rooms carry the story forward through later island homes, archaeology, coast changes, and the people who lived here at different times.
The museum is open, but one major exhibit is not. The underground Stories Beneath Our Feet exhibit remains closed after damage from Hurricane Milton as of July 31, 2026. Other exhibits and guided programs still help explain the mound and the island’s longer past.
Check the day’s museum hours, tours, open exhibits, parking, and grounds access before going. The site’s own pages list different closing times for the grounds, so confirm that detail instead of relying on a copied schedule.
For a first visit, a guided program can help connect the house above to the mound below. The site makes more sense when both parts are read together.
