Old Brick Road keeps Flagler County's Dixie Highway history on the map
Flagler County maintains an 8.6-mile surviving segment of Old Brick Road, an early Dixie Highway route north of Bunnell.
Old Brick Road is an old transportation record that happens to remain on the county road map.
The 8.6-mile piece north of Bunnell was built for an early Dixie Highway route. Work ended in 1916, one year before Flagler County was formed. The new county took on both the road and its debt. That fact ties this quiet stretch straight to the first long car-trip era.
It is still a county road, but it is not a normal sight-seeing short cut. The surface can be rough. County work has also put topsoil over parts of the brick to curb damage from heavy logging trucks. So an old photo of bare red brick may not match the road you find today.
Check current county notices, weather, and road conditions before going. If the route is soft, blocked, or a poor fit for the car, turn around. The story does not depend on every brick being bare. It comes from a county still carrying an early highway in its working road file.
Where to see it
Old Brick Road north of Bunnell. Check Flagler County's current road notice and weather before using it; protection work can leave parts of the brick surface covered.
