Ravine Gardens makes Palatka feel unexpected
Ravine Gardens State Park gives Palatka a rare Florida landscape: steephead ravines, a spring-fed branch, New Deal gardens, and trails with very different footing.
Palatka can surprise people, and Ravine Gardens State Park is one reason.
The park contains two steephead ravines, up to 120 feet deep, cut by the spring-fed Whitewater Branch. In the 1930s, federal relief work transformed the site into formal gardens and trails, making it one of Florida’s nine New Deal-era state parks.
The easy-looking option still deserves a closer look. Ravine Loop is a 1.8-mile paved route, but the park warns that its elevation changes can be steep. Springs Trail is moderate, while the 2.5-mile Azalea Trail is strenuous, with narrow paths, exposed roots, stone stairs, and suspension bridges.
Azaleas bloom in a rolling season rather than all at once, and weather can move the timing. Peak flowering usually falls between January and March. Check the current park page before making bloom, event, or facility plans.
Ravine Gardens gives Palatka more than a pretty garden. It makes the city’s geology, 1930s public works, and walking landscape visible in one place.
Where to see it
