Sarasota County fertilizer rules are a summer yard check
Unincorporated Sarasota County restricts nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer from June through September and keeps year-round rules near water.
In unincorporated Sarasota County, do not use fertilizer with nitrogen or phosphorus from June 1 through September 30. Summer rain can wash those plant foods off a yard and into streets, drains, creeks, and bays.
The rest of the year still has rules. Lawn and garden fertilizer must have at least half of its nitrogen in slow-release form. Keep it at least 10 feet from the water, and keep grass clippings out of roads and storm drains. Those small steps help the yard without feeding algae farther downstream.
The county rule does not settle every city address. If the home is in Sarasota, Venice, North Port, or Longboat Key, check that city’s code before buying a bag or booking a lawn crew. An HOA may add a private yard rule, but it does not replace the public one. Use the address to find the right rule, then show the date and water buffer to anyone who works on the lawn.
