Stephen Foster puts White Springs on the Suwannee song map
Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park is a state-run White Springs park where the Suwannee River, a memorial, and Florida folk culture meet.
White Springs has a Florida story many people hear before they understand the map.
Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park sits beside the Suwannee River. Its grounds bring together music, old crafts, the river, and North Florida folk life. Foster never came to Florida or saw this part of the Suwannee. Still, his 1851 song made the river’s name known across the country.
Foster sold “Old Folks at Home” to E. P. Christy, whose minstrel shows spread the song. Florida made it the state song in 1935 and chose new lyrics in 2008. The park story therefore includes both the tune people know and the setting in which it first became popular.
Use the state park page for entry details, events, and alerts. The Craft Village, Park Store, or carillon may not be open on the day you visit. Even so, the grounds still tie White Springs and Hamilton County to the river story. Check the day’s notice before you go.
