Florida new-resident license exchange includes vision and hearing checks
A new Florida resident exchanging a valid out-of-state license can avoid written and road exams, but the visit still includes identity, address, vision, and hearing checks.
Moving to Florida does not always mean taking the driving test again.
New residents have a 30-day clock for getting a Florida driver license after establishing residency. The exchange does not require written or road tests when the out-of-state license is valid, but vision and hearing checks still apply. The office will also need the identity, Social Security, and Florida address documents that fit the person’s situation.
That is where people get tripped up. A valid license from another state can help with the exam side. It is not the same as having every Florida document ready. Name changes, address proof, immigration or lawful-status papers, and appointment rules can all change the visit.
Before going to the office, use the current FLHSMV “What to Bring” lane for your situation. Bring original or accepted documents, not a hopeful stack of maybes. If your old license is close to expiration, lost, or tied to a different name, check the page before counting on a smooth swap.
Many moves do not require a full driving do-over. The vision, hearing, and document checks still deserve a real plan.
